A new ice cream destination is coming to Costa Mesa, as Climb Ice Cream prepares to open its first storefront at The OC Mix, county records show. Located at 3313 Hyland Ave STE B2, the dessert shop is sure to be a hit for shoppers at the retail hub.

The timeline for the concept’s opening has been delayed due to permitting. The latest records with the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Environmental Health Division show plans were submitted in July, and they are on their second round of revisions. The hope is to open in November in the 400-square-foot space.

Founded by JoJo Ichikawa, Climb Ice Cream began as a passion project in her home kitchen last year. She was formerly in the tech world but was inspired into entrepreneurialism by a lifetime of global travel and climbing adventures. Ichikawa prides herself on using top ingredients for her flavors, which include Ube Chocolate Chip, Vanilla, Key Climb Pie, Cardamom Vanilla, and Cupcake Circus.  There will also be freshly made waffle cones and milkshakes.

“I started making my own ice cream because I couldn’t find what I was craving—something that was worth the calories and wouldn’t leave me feeling bloated or sluggish,” said Ichikawa. “Most store-bought brands are full of additives. I wanted something real.”
For the first six months or so, she will run the shop herself, with the help of her husband. They will be open 7 days a week, starting at noon and staying open until at least 6 PM, but she told What Now OC they “do plan to stay open later to catch the after-dinner crowds.   We will be flexible to meet the demand.”

Climb Ice Cream was announced as a new tenant by Continental Realty Corporation last month. It will join other notable retailers, including BoConcept, Design Within Reach, La-Z-Boy, and Roche Bobois, and restaurants like Arc Food and Libations, Butcher’s House, and Greenleaf Kitchen & Cocktails.
